3 Tips For Alzheimers Caregivers
1. Take Care of Yourself First
It's simple. You can't help someone else if your basic needs are not being met. Physical and mental exhaustion are very common in people who
spend countless hours caring for their loved one. Avoiding burnout is vital for both your health, and your loved one's health.
It may be hard for you to take care of yourself properly because you feel like you are being selfish, but it's realy the exact opposite. If
you are caring for someone al by yourself it's even more important for you to make sure your needs are being met.
I have heard about people who think that they “owe” their loved one this care so much that they run themselves ragged, and then end up needing
hospital care themselves. It's realy sad when this happens. It's also just counter- productive. I just can't say it enough: take care of yourself
first!
2. Get Some Rest
Although people may be different when it comes to how many hours of sleep they may need, having good sleep habits is realy good for you. You
may have troubles faling asleep or staying asleep because you are depressed, anxious, or have had too much caffeine or alcohol at night.
Though this is fairly common in AD caregivers, sleep deprivation can have some bad consequences such as getting sick. If you are having a hard
time solving your sleep problems, you may want to get professional help.
3. Eat Right
Proper nutrition is essential to keeping your body healthy, so it's important to eat regular balanced meals each and every day. Too often
caregivers overlook their own health as they become focussed on the needs of their loved one.
