Secrets To Successful Alzheimers Caregiving

Alzheimer's patients often get very angry, especially when they need to go outside in the open. Once they are outside they start to wander, having no idea where they are or who they are. As a person with Alzheimer's gets angry, a caregiver should think fast to do something to distract them. What was the patients' favorite pastime, food, sport, or game?

You have to be very careful because Alzheimer's patients can lash out in the early stages of the disease. To help this, slightly tap the patient on the shoulder and start to talk clearly, slowly and with short sentences of what topic you know the patient will like to talk about. The little tap on the shoulder changes the brain wave and it is calm again.

Also, Alzheimer's patients talk a lot. They are always in their own little world but there is always the long term memory they can remember.

This one little sweet heart of a lady lost her younger brother in the big flooding in Canada back in 1975 and she remembers every detail of the incident.  Ask her about something that happened five minutes ago and she can't remember. The short term memory goes away very quickly.

Alzheimer's patients are like kids. They love kids' shows, kids' food, and also like to be fed.

Caregivers have to be really compassionate and caring with lots of patience to provide care around the clock.
